- National Security Act, 1947
Passed by Congress on 26 July1947 as part of President Harry S. Truman’s Cold War program, the National Security Act reorganized the U.S. armed forces, merging the Department of War and Department of Navy into one national military establishment, which became the U.S. Department of Defense in 1949. A separate Department of the Air Force was also created. Furthermore, the act established the National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency.
