National Science Foundation
Created in 1950 by Congress as an independent body “to promote the progress of science; to advance national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense,” the National Science Foundation provided funding for basic scientific research, much of it related to military uses, to maintain the U.S. scientific leadership.
