War Shipping Administration

War Shipping Administration
(WSA)
Established on 7 February 1942, the WSA was to acquire and operate all U.S. merchant shipping, allocate ships to the navy, and encourage production of vessels, as well as provide training for merchant seamen. The administration provided for the building of liberty ships and Victory ships and saw a massive expansion in the size of the merchant fleet. It was absorbed back into the United States Maritime Commission in September 1946.
