War Relocation Authority

War Relocation Authority
(WRA)
The WRA was established by Executive Order 9102 on 18 March 1942 to relocate and house Japanese Americans during World War II. The head of the authority was Milton Eisenhower. More than 112,000 Japanese Americans were housed in 10 camps under WRA supervision.
Locations of the camps included Gila River, Arizona; Granada, Colorado; Heart Mountain, Wyoming; Jerome, Arkansas; Manzanar, California; Minidoka, Idaho; Poston, Arizona; Topaz, Utah; Tule Lake, California; and Rohwer, Arkansas. The camps were basic barrack- style centers, fenced with armed guards in remote areas. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Endo v. United States, some inmates were allowed to leave the camps beginning in 1944, and the internment order was rescinded in 1945. The WRA ceased operations on 30 June 1946.
