Chiang Kai-Shek

Chiang Kai-Shek
(1887-1975)
Chiang Kai-shek, also known as Jian Jieshi, was a Chinese soldier and politician who assumed control of the Republic of China in 1928 as leader of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang). As well as trying to unify and modernize China, Chiang was involved in a long war with communist forces led by Mao Zedong, even after the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and the war with Japan that began in 1937. After Pearl Harbor, Chiang was included among the “Big Four” Allied leaders and attended the Cairo Conference in 1941. Although he agreed to cooperate with the communist armies, open conflict soon resumed once the Japanese were defeated. However, the nationalists were defeated and forced to withdraw to Taiwan (Formosa), where Chiang established the Republic of China based in Taipei and ruled until his death.
