Carnera, Primo

Carnera, Primo
(1906-1967)
Six-foot-seven-inch Italian-born boxer Primo Carnera left home to work in France in various laboring jobs and found work in a circus as a boxer, weight lifter, and wrestler. He became a professional boxer in 1928 and won several fights by fair means or foul—several fights were fixed by his manager Léon Sée. In 1930, Carnera came to the United States and again fought in some contests in which the outcome seemed to be predetermined. However, after one bout, his opponent Ernie Schaaf died of brain damage.
In 1933, Carnera knocked out heavyweight champion Jack Sharkey in the sixth round. After twice defending his title, Carnera was mercilessly beaten by Max Baer in 11 rounds. In 1935, he was knocked out by Joe Louis, and he returned to Italy where he became a film actor from 1940 to 1942. He returned to the United States in 1946 as a wrestler and became a U.S. citizen in 1953. He also appeared in several films, including On the Waterfront (1954).
