Women’s Air Force Service Pilots
(WASPS)
   In 1943, WASPS was established to enable women pilots to assist with the war effort. Although not granted military status, more than 1,000 women served transporting planes from bases to base. Thirty-eight women died in crashes or accidents. WASPS was disbanded in 1945.
