Bataan

Bataan
Bataan is the peninsula on the island of Luzon in the Philippines where General Douglas MacArthur took a stand against the advancing Japanese army in January 1942. While MacArthur withdrew in March to head the buildup of U.S. forces elsewhere, together with Filipino troops, U.S. forces held out in Bataan for three months before being forced to surrender in April. Some 75,000 prisoners were then force-marched more than 100 miles in a week to camps, enduring harsh treatment and high temperatures en route. Almost 10,000 soldiers died as a result. The battle had, however, significantly slowed the Japanese advance and gave U.S. forces a chance to regroup in the Pacific. Bataan was liberated from the Japanese by U.S. forces in February 1945.
