Shouse, Jouett

Shouse, Jouett
(1879-1968)
Born in Kentucky, Jouett Shouse moved with his family to Missouri, where he attended school and the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was editor of the Lexington Herald, from 1898 to 1904, practiced law, and served as a state senator from 1913 to 1915 and then U.S. congressman from 1915 to 1918. He was assistant secretary of the treasury at the end of Woodrow Wilson’s administration from 1919 to 1920. In the 1920s, Shouse was president of the Association against the Prohibition Amendment and, active in the Democratic Party, he served as chair of the Democratic National Committee from 1929 until 1932. Increasingly disenchanted with the New Deal, he was active in the American Liberty League. He subsequently worked for different business interests and continued his own law practice until his retirement in 1965.
