Sandburg, Carl

Sandburg, Carl
(1878-1967)
After a time as an itinerant worker and serving in the Spanish-American War, poet and writer Carl Sandburg became a reporter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then worked for the Chicago Daily News. His poetry celebrating the city and working people, Chicago Poems (1915), Cornhuskers (1918), and Smoke and Steel (1920), won him prizes and national and international recognition as a “poet of the people.” He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for his four-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, The War Years (1939), and for his Complete Poems in 1951. He was awarded the gold medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1952 for his work in history and biography. He published Harvest Poems in 1960 and Honey and Salt in 1963.
