Panay Incident
   The USS Panay was a gunboat used by the U.S. Navy to patrol the Yangtze River in China to protect American lives and commerce. On 12 December 1937, it had been picking up American consular staff from Nanking when it came under attack by Japanese aircraft and was sunk. Three lives were lost and 48 were wounded. Following protests, the Japanese government apologized for the attack and paid an indemnity of $2.2.million. The incident did much to increase public antipathy toward Japan.
