Organization Of American States
- Organization Of American States
(OAS)
The OAS was established at the Inter-American Conference in Bogota, Colombia, on 30 April 1948. It expanded on the Rio Pact. The OAS confirmed inter-American cooperation and hemispheric solidarity; prohibited military, political, or economic intervention in the affairs of one state by another; and promised cooperation with the United Nations and its goals. However, in allowing united military action between the United States and Latin American countries, it was also an extension of containment.
