The trial of Nazi war criminals, as agreed by the Allied powers at the Yalta Conference, was held in Nuremburg, Germany, and lasted from 1945 to 1949. The first and main trial of 21 surviving (Adolf Hitler and several others committed suicide before the war’s end) leading figures in the Nazi government lasted from November 1945 to October 1946. It resulted in the conviction and execution of 10 men, including Air Marshal Hermann Goering, but he escaped the penalty by committing suicide the night before he was to be hanged. Eight of the remaining individuals, including Hitler’s deputy Rudolph Hess and his architect Rudolph Speer, were convicted and sentenced to prison terms.
