Missouri Ex Rel. Gaines v. Canada

Missouri Ex Rel. Gaines v. Canada
(305 U.S. 337, 1938).
The state of Missouri provided separate educational facilities for white and black Americans. However, it did not have a separate law school. When an African American Lloyd Gaines applied for entry to the Missouri Law School in 1936, he was denied. Gaines sued the school (Canada was the name of the registrar), and on 12 December 1938 the Supreme Court ruled six to two that he had been denied his rights under the Fourteenth Amendment and that the state had to provide equal in-state education.
