Hillman, Sidney

Hillman, Sidney
(1887-1946)
Sidney Hillman was born in Lithuania. He came to the United States in 1907 after being arrested for his labor activities, and he found work in the clothing industry in Chicago, Illinois. In 1915, he became president of the newly created Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union. During the 1920s, Hillman espoused a New Unionism, which stressed cooperation with employers and workers’ educational, social, and welfare programs. Hillman supported Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal during the Great Depression and had some influence on aspects of the National Industrial Recovery Act. He was a member of the board of the National Recovery Administration and worked with other unionists to secure Roosevelt’s reelection in 1936. In 1935, Hillman was a cofounder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and became one of its vice presidents. In 1936, he helped found the American Labor Party, a left-wing group based in New York. During World War II, he headed the labor section of the Office of Production Management and then was vice chairman of the War Production Board. He established the Political Action Committee within the CIO to support Roosevelt.
