Destroyers-For-Bases Agreement, 1940

Destroyers-For-Bases Agreement, 1940
The Destroyers for-Bases Agreement was an agreement signed in September 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill granting the United States 99-year rent free leases on naval and air bases on British possessions in the Caribbean in return for 50 out-of-service destroyers. The agreement indicated the growing support for Britain by the Roosevelt administration and angered some isolationists. It was justified on the grounds that it strengthened U.S. security.
