Curry, John Steuart

Curry, John Steuart
(1897-1946)
Born in Kansas, John Steuart Curry studied art at Kansas City Art Institute in 1916, the Art Institute of Chicago from 1916 to 1918, and Geneva College in Pennsylvania from 1918 to 1919. He worked as an art teacher and illustrator for magazines and novels in New York City and spent a year in Paris in 1926. In 1937, Curry became artist in residence at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. One of the regionalists, much of Curry’s work depicted American landscapes and themes in U.S. history, like his Baptism in Kansas (1928), Tornado over Kansas (1929), and Wisconsin Landscape (1937-1938). In 1934, Curry completed several murals in public buildings for the Federal Art Project. In 1937, his murals in the Kansas statehouse, showing an angry figure of John Brown, and also including members of the Ku Klux Klan, were regarded as controversial, and he did not complete the projected four panels.
